Although the series was warmly received by fans and critics alike, it never quite became the pop culture juggernaut that other shows like stranger things Where the witcher have. However, it’s still one of the most exciting shows to air on the service and ahead of the third season on August 10, you can stay busy watching some of the other shows similar to Locke and Key.

Stranger Things (2016–present)

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t given Netflix stranger things give it a try, but given its stellar cast, high production value, and nostalgic ’80s feel, there’s no reason not to. The sci-fi show has long been the jewel in Netflix’s crown and with the new season making record numbers for the service, it’s easy to see why. The series begins as a small-town story where a boy goes missing, prompting the arrival of a super-powered child and rocking the town of Hawkins.


October Faction (2020)

This 2020 Netflix Series Only Lasted One Season But It Has Enough Similarities With Locke and Key to earn a spot on this list. As Locke and Key this supernatural series is also based on comic books and focused on a central theme of family. The show follows a couple of monster hunters who return to their hometown but are faced with a stark choice when their own children begin to develop powers there. There are monsters and wizards galore, and enough family drama to keep anyone interested in the genre busy.

Dark (2017-2020)

Netflix’s first German series Dark is one of the most exciting shows on the streaming service. Whereas Locke and Key is certainly darker than many other family shows, the German series takes a darker approach to its young characters and storyline. The sci-fi thriller delves into time travel after the kidnapping of two children, leading to an exploration of four families in the fictional town of Winden, Germany. The show is a great blend of sci-fi and the supernatural and arguably one of the smartest series with intricate explorations of human nature mixed with parallel worlds and time travel.

Shadowhunters (2016-2019)

Cassandra Clare’s hugely popular YA series spawned the critical and box office disaster that was The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones adaptation in 2013, but eventually the book series found new life on Freeform. The three-season series titled Shadow Hunters was a much more faithful adaptation of the world of angels and demons, with the protagonist Clary (Katherine McNamara) immersed in a world of fantasy and mystery as she tries to find her missing mother and discovers that she is descended from a long line of demon hunters called Shadowhunters.

The Umbrella Academy (2019–present)

If there’s not enough Netflix on this list, here’s another recommendation that’s sure to fill the key-shaped hole in any fan’s heart. The Umbrella Academy, adapted from the comics by Gerard Way also delves into the supernatural world, but it does so through a unique family of superheroes raised by an overbearing father and robot mother. The show mixes superhero action and family drama and continues to raise the stakes season after season as it explores time travel and alternate realities. Supported by a cast such as Elliot Paige, Tom Hopper, Mary J. Blige and other talented cast, the series is a big binge and has a lot to offer any fan bold enough to watch all three seasons before the fourth soon arrives.

Mortal (2019-2021)

Another foreign language series worth exploring is France Deadly. The series revolves around two teenagers Sofiane (Carl Malapa) and Viktor (Nemo Schiffman) who make a deal with a voodoo god Obe to find out who murdered Sofiane’s brother. Sofiane is gifted with the ability to manipulate the actions of others while Victor is gifted with mind control, but things predictably worsen with the children’s relationship with the god and the two work together to break free from Obe. . Fortunately, the two meet Luisa (Manon Besch) a voodoo teenager who helps the duo imprison Obe. The series has two seasons, all available on Netflix.

Curon (2020)

This Italian drama centers on two teenagers who come with her to their mother’s hometown and find themselves embroiled in a supernatural horror that dates back to the death of their grandmother and the departure of their mother. The series is a goofy mix of teen drama and horror as we see the two teenagers come to terms with the evil that drove their mother out of town in the first place. The Netflix show lasts a single season, so you won’t have any trouble keeping up with it on any given weekend, even if it’s a bit slow at first. The stars of the 2020 series Valeria Billelo, Frederic Russo and Luca Lionello in leading roles.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017–2019)

Netflix’s take on the author Lemon Snickets / Daniel Handlerpopular children’s novels A series of unfortunate events was everything fans of the books wanted and although the web series was much lighter than Lockey and Key, it’s nonetheless essential viewing for anyone interested in well-developed family shows. The series follows the adventures and misfortunes of the three Baudelaire children as they are taken to their various loved ones following the mysterious death of their parents. Neil Patrick Harris puts his acting and theatrical skills to full use with a delightfully oversized performance as Count Olaf and the series is a grand display of his considerable talent.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

Decidedly more grown-up fare than most of the recommendations on this list, but if you’re thinking supernatural family drama, it’s hard to pass up. Mike Flanaganis brilliant Shirley Jacksonit is The Haunting of Hill House. Explore the Crains’ family and relationships as they confront the darkness that lurks behind their childhood home, the Hill House. The show is split into two timelines, dealing with the children’s experiences in the house then and now how it continues to affect them in the present day. The series is a masterclass in horror filmmaking, and Flanagan leverages Netflix’s ensemble cast and budget, delivering one of the most iconic horror series to ever exist.
