A new trailer for Season 5 of Hallmark’s “Chesapeake Shores” series hints at a love triangle. But fans aren’t quite sure what to make of that after the end of a multi-year love triangle on “When Calls the Heart.”
This article contains minor spoilers for Season 5 based on cast interviews and trailers.
New trailer teases that Abby might have to choose between 2 men
With Jesse Metcalfe leaving the series, which will likely end with the conclusion of Trace and Abby’s love story, fans are unsure of what lies ahead for the character of Meghan Ory’s future. A new trailer hints that she’ll have her own love triangle.
The trailer first shows renewed sparks between Jay Ross (Grestyon Holt) and Abby. Season 4 ended with Trace and Abby kissing after a season of its own, where Abby had previously explored possible sparks with Jay. But a future with Trace had seemed more possible to him. Now that that is moving away from her, it looks like she and Jay might still have a chance.
There’s a scene where Jay says he’s hoping he can spend the day with Abby and the girls on the beach. Abby says she doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Jay jokes, “It’s a school activity, not a date,” and Abby laughs.
But then there’s another scene in the trailer with a new character, Evan McKenzie (played by Robert Buckley), interacting with Abby.
First, we see him say to Abby, “I decided to go ahead with building on one condition. I want you to take stock of the project.
Then there’s another scene on a mini-golf course where she asks him if he enjoys playing the role of an eccentric millionaire. And he answers: “Billionaire”.
In the next scene, Abby asks her father, “Who’s coming next?” The trailer then shows Jay, Evan, and Trace in turn.
A new showrunner takes over this season
Although “Chesapeake Shores” was previously directed by showrunner John Tinker, Tinker is now the showrunner of “When Calls the Heart”. Emmy winner Phoef Sutton has now taken over the role of showrunner, TVLine reported.
The deadline initially indicated that it was Metcalfe’s decision to quit the show, not Hallmark’s. His story will end at the start of the new season. In a statement to Deadline, The Hallmark Channel said:
A new season of Hallmark Channel’s hugely popular scripted series, Chesapeake Ribs, returns this summer. Jesse Metcalfe, who plays Trace Riley, has decided to quit the show. Her character’s story will end at the start of season five. Jesse is a valued member of the Crown Media family; we look forward to continuing to work with him on projects including original films on Hallmark Channel, as well as his Hallmark Movies & Mysteries film series, The Mysteries of Martha’s Vineyard..
On Instagram, Metcalfe shared more details about his departure. When Metcalfe announced on Instagram that he was quitting the show, fans asked him why. He was quick to respond, explaining that he “I wanted to leave on 🔝.
And then he added a more revealing explanation, writing: “… and I didn’t like the direction my script was going …”
“Chesapeake Shores” premieres August 15th and this season will feature 10 episodes. Season 4 was a shorter season, but Season 5 will return to normal length.
