There’s no shortage of weird couples inside Office. Throughout the show’s nine seasons, fans were aware of couples like Michael and Helene (Pam’s mother), Angela and Andy, and Jim and Katy. However, Ryan and Kelly have one of the most chaotic and toxic relationships on the show. Their intermittent relationship was absurd, but a lot of fun to watch. But how did it even start?
Kelly and Ryan’s relationship started where most stories begin, in the writers’ room. Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak have been hired to write Office and also be part of the cast. And while their characters, Kelly and Ryan, had to interact at some point, the original plans weren’t necessary for them to date. But after the other writers saw the unique chemistry between Novak and Kaling, they wrote them as a couple.
How BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling’s Chemistry Affected Their Characters in “The Office”
In an interview with NPR, Novak spoke candidly about the unique dynamic that he and Kaling shared. The couple have spent tons of time together thanks to their work on Office. It wasn’t long before they laughed at each other, shaved, and more. And while the actors didn’t originally notice how unique their dynamics were, other writers were quick to take advantage of them.

“The reason our characters started dating on the show is because they couldn’t get over this dynamic that we had in the show. [The Office] writers’ room that neither of us realized was funny at all, ”Novak shared. “And other people were laughing and shaking their heads. And we would say, “What? And they were like, ‘You two!’ And then before we knew it, they wrote to us like this horrible partnership. “
Kelly and Ryan’s fights were inspired by actual arguments between the writers
After Office the writers wrote in Kelly and Ryan’s partnership, they continued to use Novak and Kaling’s actual interactions in the series. It was not uncommon for them to take notes on the actors’ arguments and put them on the show. Kaling and Novak have often helped with this as well. They even improvised fights on the set.

The cast members of “The Office” still have a close relationship today.
Kaling and Novak have also dated in real life. And just like their characters, they’ve split up and reunited once or twice. However, unlike Kelly and Ryan, they had a much healthier relationship. Kaling even admitted to writing scenes for Ryan and Kelly so she could spend more time with Novak on set.
They managed to stay close even after Office finally finished. The couple still hang out every week and Novak is the godfather of Kaling’s children. Novak even admitted that Kaling was one of the closest people in his life. It’s pretty cool that the actors have become a family to each other. Admittedly, their relationship is much better than that of their characters.
