Michelle Robinson, 25, met Barack Obama, then 28, while they were working at the same law firm.
Michelle was assigned to mentor a newly recruited Barack at Sidley Austin LLP after the firm noted that they were both studying at the same university.
“Because I went to Harvard and he went to Harvard, and the company thought, ‘Oh, we’re going to put these two people in touch,'” Michelle told ABC News.
“Not once, however, have I thought of him as someone I would like to date,” Michelle admitted in her memoir, Becoming, adding:
“On the one hand, I was his mentor at the firm. I had also recently vowed not to date anyone, too absorbed in work to put in the slightest effort.
However, a month after working together, Barack asked Michelle on a date and they went to the movies to see Spike Lee’s movie Do The Right Thing.
“We clicked right away… at the end of the date, it was over… I was sold,” Michelle said.
Meanwhile, Barack told O, “I gave him the best ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table also acting as a sidewalk. I kissed her and it tasted like chocolate.
In 1991, Barack knelt down and proposed to Michelle at a dinner party to celebrate her success on her final law exam.
“And then the server came with the dessert and a platter. And there was the ring,” Michelle said later. “And I was completely shocked.”
The couple married in 1992 and Michelle has spoken about how careful her husband is to make his vows perfect.
“Barack didn’t promise any riches, only a life that would be interesting. On this promise, he kept “, she recalled later.
Their daughter Malia Ann Obama was born on July 4, 1991, making the couple parents for the first time.
She was joined by a younger sister Natasha Obama, known as Sasha, in 2001.
Barack has previously said he hopes he and Michelle’s relationship could inspire their daughters.
“The good thing about girls is that they have a wonderful role model in their mother,” he told Essence.
“They saw how Michelle and I interact – not only the love but also the respect I show their mother.
“So I think they have pretty high expectations of how relationships should be, and that gives me some confidence in the future.
“I sometimes joke about that stuff, but the truth is, they’re smart, stable young women.”
The family first became public in 2004 when Barack became a senator from Illinois.
During this time, Michelle worked as the vice president of community and outpatient affairs at the University of Chicago hospitals.
In 2008, Barack Obama was elected 44th President of the United States of America.
He once credited his wife Michelle with helping him reach the top position in power.
“If you had to list the 100 most popular things I’ve done as president, being married to Michelle Obama is number one,” Barack said in a State of the Union speech in 2010 .
He has since continued to speak of his appreciation for his wife’s support and guidance in most interviews.
“Obviously, I couldn’t have done anything I did without Michelle… not only was she a great first lady, she’s just my rock,” he told Oprah. “I rely on her in so many ways every day.”
After stepping down in 2017, the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
“Happy 25th birthday @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you are still my best friend and the most amazing man I know. I
