  • Robert Lewandowski is reportedly looking to leave Bayern Munich if an extension is not agreed with the club.
  • The delay in contract negotiations, as well as rumors linking Erling Haaland to Bayern seem to have had an impact on Lewandowski’s decision-making.
  • In all likelihood, Bayern will let Lewandowski leave for free in 2023 if a contract extension isn’t agreed.

Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at Der Klassiker, winning the Bundesliga title for the 10th consecutive time. The usual beer showers and celebrations were seen at the Allianz Arena. However, deep inside me, a question kept bavaria the jubilation of the fans under control. Is this the last time Robert Lewandowski plays in a Bayern jersey?

In the last two months there have been great dramas Lewandowskithe situation. So far, Bayer haven’t entered into contract extension talks with Lewandowski, who is undoubtedly the club’s biggest player right now. But why, exactly?

Even talks with Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller haven’t officially taken place, but the two are expected to stay, signing a new 2-3 year contract. But what is already preventing Oliver Kahn, Hasan Salihamidzic and Herbert Hainer from getting Lewandowski, Müller and Neuer to sign extensions?

Neuer and Müller’s cases are more settled, and to be fair, they don’t have the kind of interest and demands from other big clubs in Europe like Lewandowski. Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, a few Premier League clubs, literally every big club would host the Pole, who is considered the best striker in the game right now by many, and Lewy’s agent Pini Zahavi has already spoken to a few.

Really, what’s stopping Bayern from ensuring Lewandowski stays on beyond his current deal which expires in 2023? The answer to this question is not simple. There are several factors!

Duration of contract and salary: Lewandowski is said to be pushing for a new 3-year deal while Bayern are only looking to offer a new 2-year deal. Considering Lewandowski is currently 33, Bayern are bound to be a bit skeptical about offering Lewy a longer contract.

But, by the standards the Pole has set, the fitness levels he has maintained and the injury-free record he has, Lewandowski isn’t wrong to ask for such a deal as well. Lewandowski currently earns €24m a year at Bayern but wants a pay rise, with what would likely be the last big deal of his career.

Can Bayern and Lewandowski come to a conclusion on the matter? Maybe a 2+1 option in the contract? But how do Bayern set the wage option? Is a 33-year-old forward worth messing with your salary structure?

Delay in contract negotiations: What appears to be the main reason for the current rogue state of relations is the fact that Bayern still haven’t officially entered into contract negotiations. Kahn, Hainer and Brazzo stressed they don’t want to be pushed while maintaining they want Lewandowski to stay at the club.

One of the reasons for the delay was the fact that Bayern wanted to understand how much money they were earning, analyze whether Covid-19 could harm the club’s finances again. It was also about which players stayed at the club and which left, basically to get a better idea of the club’s spending and income before offering Lewandowksi, the club’s biggest earner, a new contract.

Lewandowski, in all honesty, didn’t like such a delay considering he’s the club’s biggest star. The situation also made him feel like Bayern didn’t want him as badly as they ideally should.

It was also reported that a meeting took place between Lewandowski’s agent and surprisingly the player’s future and the contract were not discussed.

Even after the German Clasico, Lewandowski admitted that the current situation ‘isn’t easy’ for him. He also pointed out that when it comes to the contract, “nothing special has happened so far.” Being the most important player, you can’t point fingers at Lewandowski for wanting to be treated in a special way.

Erling Haaland rumours: Although Bayern have argued that signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dormtund is not a financially plausible thing, it has also been reported that Brazzo is very keen on getting the Norwegian. He even reportedly had some talks with Mino Raiola, Haaland’s agent.

Back in 2016, when Gonzalo Higuain was at Juventus, Bayern were linked with the Argentine. Already then, Lewandowski’s agent said: “those who have a beautiful bride should not look at other beautiful brides”. This time, comments from Bayern bosses in appreciation of Haaland had not gone down well with Lewandowski’s agent and the Pole himself.

Bayern are said to not even be in the running to sign Haaland, but the club’s reported interest in the player might have upset Lewandowski a bit.

Will Lewandowski leave? As things stand, it seems more likely that Lewandowski would fulfill his current deal at the club. The chances of him leaving for free in 2023 are bigger than he making a switch this summer this year, unless of course a club comes up with a big offer, and Bayern also have a suitable replacement from the attacker available.

Bayern Munich have messed up in the past with the contract situations of Toni Kroos, David Alaba. Yes, the club cannot pay like some of the other big European clubs can. Could Bayern have done more in Lewandowski’s situation?

Yes, a little more appreciation, less flirting with Haaland might have convinced Lewy more. But, it’s fair to say that the match between Bayern and Lewandowksi – considered arguably the most perfect in Bundesliga history – seems to have gone badly wrong in recent affairs.
