Global Biodegradable Mulch Film Market to Reach $83.6 million by 2026
A mulch is described as a layer of material that is applied to the soil surface. Mulch can be organic or inorganic, temporary or permanent, and can be applied not only to the soil but also around existing plants. Mulch acts as a layer between the soil and the atmosphere and blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, thus ensuring reduced evaporation. Mulch application also has the ability to prevent water from reaching the soil by absorbing or blocking rainwater. Typically, mulch layers are 2 inches or more deep when applied. The mulching process is used in gardening and commercial agricultural production activities with the main desire to improve soil productivity. The main purposes of mulch application are to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, reduce weed growth, improve soil health and fertility, and improve the visual appearance of the area. Mulch application depends on the season and the purpose. Biodegradable mulch has gained prominence in recent years, due to growing concerns about the environmental impact of using plastic mulch films. Typically, biodegradable mulch is made from plant starch, sugars, or polyester fibers. Starches derived from plants such as corn and wheat are typically used to create biodegradable mulch. Mulch films are known to be more permeable than traditional mulch films and therefore allow more water to seep into the soil. Biodegradable mulch films are therefore able to reduce weed growth, prevent soil erosion, increase soil temperature and conserve soil moisture. Application of biodegradable mulch films therefore has the potential to reduce the need to use herbicides.

Biopolymers are used to make mulch films that facilitate plant growth. They are also key materials for developing cover/packaging films to protect nursery plants. Biodegradable polymers are also used as fertilizer encapsulations to provide controlled release. In horticulture, the material is used as a binder and in the manufacture of flowerpots. Biodegradable mulch differs from plastic mulch in that the form is not removed from the field after the season is over, as biodegradable mulch decomposes due to heat. Mulch is broken down into water and carbon dioxide by soil microorganisms, leaving no toxic residue.

Amid COVID-19 crisis, Global Biodegradable Film Market Estimated at US$62.7 million in 2022, is expected to reach a revised size of US$83.6 million by 2026, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6% over the analysis period. Europe should reach US$15.6 million by 2026. Asia Pacific is expected to become the fastest growing regional market with a CAGR of 8.6% over the analysis period. The market is experiencing healthy growth, driven primarily by its increasing use in the agricultural industry. The many benefits offered by biodegradable mulch films, including maintaining soil temperature, speeding up germination and cultivation processes, reducing or eliminating the use of pesticides or herbicides, and ensuring long-term soil sustainability, fuel the adoption of biodegradable mulch films. Additionally, biodegradable mulch films also help reduce water usage, ensuring nutrients and fertilizers stay close to crops or plants and preventing fruits and vegetables from coming into direct contact with the soil. . The process of agricultural cultivation should therefore benefit enormously from the use of biodegradable mulching films. As farmers and growers seek to maintain soil quality to improve crop yield and efficiency, the demand for biodegradable mulch films is expected to increase further in the coming years. Growing demand for high-quality crops is also expected to drive demand for movies. Besides the agricultural industry, the use of biodegradable mulching films is also growing in greenhouses.

Rising concerns regarding environmental damage caused by the use of plastic mulch films and other inorganic materials, and government policies promoting the use of bio-based products are driving the growth of the biodegradable mulch films market. The adoption of strict environmental regulations across the world to control the harmful effects of inorganic materials is also driving the shift to biodegradable alternatives. Plastic polyethylene mulch is currently widely used for crops, mainly due to its easy availability and low cost. However, concerns about the sustainability of agricultural production activity involving the use of polyethylene mulch have arisen due to the fact that plastic mulch film is made from petroleum-based raw materials that are not renewable in nature. In addition, the use of polyethylene mulch also contributes to the production of waste in agricultural lands and landfills.

North America and Western Europe countries are major users of biodegradable mulch films, mainly due to the fact that developed countries have widely adopted advanced cultivation techniques as part of efforts to boost the cultivation process. Europe is another major market for biodegradable mulch films, with the region witnessing their growing use supported by technical and scientific data and the growing willingness of European farms to use biodegradable variants. The increasing volumes of waste generated by non-biodegradable fossil mulching materials have led to a greater preference for alternative materials. Specifically, the accumulation of waste on agricultural land is a major concern for the region, as this waste can negatively impact plant growth and overall crop yield. Due to the detrimental impact on the environment, farmers and agricultural businesses are turning to biodegradable mulch films. Huge growth potential exists in developing economies Asia PacificLatin America Middle East & Africa and Eastern Europe. The large population of developing countries such as China and India and the need to increase food production to meet their growing food needs is expected to drive the demand for biodegradable mulching films.
