A mulch is described as a layer of material that is applied to the soil surface. Mulch can be organic or inorganic, temporary or permanent, and can be applied not only to the soil but also around existing plants. Mulch acts as a layer between the soil and the atmosphere and blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, thus ensuring reduced evaporation. Mulch application also has the ability to prevent water from reaching the soil by absorbing or blocking rainwater. Typically, mulch layers are 2 inches or more deep when applied. The mulching process is used in gardening and commercial agricultural production activities with the main desire to improve soil productivity. Typically, biodegradable mulch is made from plant starch, sugars, or polyester fibers. Starches derived from plants such as corn and wheat are typically used to create biodegradable mulch. Mulch films are known to be more permeable than traditional mulch films and therefore allow more water to seep into the soil. Biodegradable mulch films are therefore able to reduce weed growth, prevent soil erosion, increase soil temperature and conserve soil moisture. Application of biodegradable mulch films therefore has the potential to reduce the need to use herbicides.
Biopolymers are used to make mulch films that facilitate plant growth. They are also key materials for developing cover/packaging films to protect nursery plants. Biodegradable polymers are also used as fertilizer encapsulations to provide controlled release. In horticulture, the material is used as a binder and in the manufacture of flowerpots. Biodegradable mulch differs from plastic mulch in that the form is not removed from the field after the season is over, as biodegradable mulch decomposes due to heat. Mulch is broken down into water and carbon dioxide by soil microorganisms, leaving no toxic residue.
