Dodgers beat Rockies 5-3 as Trayce Thompson 3-Run Homer Lifts LA on July 4 – NBC Los Angeles

Trayce Thompson hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, when the Dodgers finally broke through against Kyle Freeland, and Los Angeles beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Monday night.

Julio Urías (7-6) earned his fourth straight start, allowing one run and five hits over six innings. The southpaw struck out seven and scored one to beat the Rockies at Dodger Stadium for the first time.

The Rockies cut their deficit to 5-3 in the ninth and had runners on the corners before falling short.

Reyes Moronta gave up a first homer to CJ Cron, who was hitless on his first three hits with two strikeouts. After two flyouts, José Iglesias picked up the glove from third baseman Hanser Alberto and Elías Díaz walked. Yency Almonte came on to face pinch hitter Charlie Blackmon, who drove to Iglesias with a single. But then Almonte pulled Connor Joe for his second career save. The other came in 2020 with Colorado.

Los Angeles closest Craig Kimbrel is still sore after taking an online workout on his back. He will have the next few days off.

Mookie Betts added a two-out RBI single in the fifth to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead on their way to an eighth straight victory on July 4.

Freeland (4-6) kept the Dodgers out of base until the fifth. With one out, Justin Turner chose to start the offense. He finished 3 for 4. Chris Taylor followed with a walk that set up Thompson, the brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson who was acquired from Detroit two weeks ago.

Thompson’s shot landed in the lower seats of left field, giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. Cody Bellinger hit a deep right double and scored on Betts’ single.

The Dodgers extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh. Bellinger walked a first base from Jhoulys Chacín, who retired the next two batters. Trea Turner doubled to tag Bellinger.

Freeland allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. The southpaw struck out five and walked one six days after beating the Dodgers 7-4 in his previous start.

Colorado led 1-0 at the Iglesias homer to top the fifth. He hit his first homer of the season last week against the Dodgers, ending a 262-hit streak dating back to last September.
