‘Crush’ Trailer Stars Rowan Blanchard as a Lesbian Teen in Love

I recently rewatched classic rom-coms (and by watching, I mean having ambient noise while I play on my phone). trendy girls, Made in Manhattanand 10 things i hate about you have all been on my recently watched list, but lately I’ve been hungry for something more contemporary, something that incorporates texting, or the dangers of seeing if someone’s seen your Instagram story, you know ?

Luckily, a cute new romantic comedy is coming to Hulu later this month. To crush is a queer high school love story that follows Rowan Blanchard as Paige, an artist obsessed with getting into CalArts who is forced to join her school’s track team. She uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s long had a crush on, but instead finds herself falling in love with an unexpected teammate – learning about love, life, and art along the way. To be of age !

Based on the trailer, the film has all the classic rom-com elements: an eccentric, amorous protagonist with a dorky friend, 20-somethings playing stylish 16-year-old brats, seductive hallway banter, stares nostalgic through the quads and Big Life Courses. The trailer promises a very 2022 universe where Paige’s sex-positive mother tells her not to eat edibles before school, where parties are strung in Phillips Hue lights, where a classmate takes care of her locker and where Paige’s crush is wearing a body chain. At secondary school? Inspiring!

One of those hallway banter moments includes Paige’s crush asking if she’s “going out today,” to which Paige replies, “I’ve been out for a really long time, I’m extremely gay.” Her crush responds, “I was actually talking about track testing.” Ugh, being 17 again. Everything is so embarrassing and inconsequential.

Alongside Blanchard, the film stars Isabella Ferreira (Love, Victor, Orange is the new black) as Paige’s crush, Auli’i Cravalho who voiced Moana (not tall) as Paige’s crush’s sister, american vandalby Tyler Alvarez, and comedy queens Megan Mullally and Michelle Buteau as Paige’s goofy mother and guidance counselor, respectively. It was produced in part by Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne. Needless to say, I’m counting the days.

To crush premieres on Hulu on April 29. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
